What to Check Before Calling for A/C Repair

Before calling for A/C repair, there are a few simple things homeowners can check. Sometimes a thermostat setting, dirty filter, tripped breaker, or blocked vent can make your air conditioner seem like it is not working properly.

Start with the thermostat.

Make sure the thermostat is set to cool, the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature, and the batteries are working if your thermostat uses them. A small thermostat issue can sometimes make the whole system seem like it is not working.

Check the air filter.

A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow and make your system struggle to cool the home. If the filter is dirty, replace it and give the system a little time to see if airflow improves.

Look at the breaker.

If the indoor or outdoor unit is not running at all, check your electrical panel to see if a breaker has tripped. If a breaker keeps tripping, do not keep resetting it over and over. That can be a sign of an electrical or equipment issue that needs professional attention.

Check the outdoor unit.

Make sure the outdoor unit is not blocked by leaves, grass, weeds, or debris. Your system needs room to breathe. Avoid taking the unit apart yourself, but do keep the area around it clear.

If you have checked the basics and your A/C is still not cooling, blowing warm air, making unusual noises, leaking water, or running constantly, it is time to schedule service.
